Monash Science Centre 2009 Lecture Series

Dr. Natalie Seach

Position: Research Scientist (PhD level)

Department: Monash University and Stem Cell Laboratories, Monash University

Areas of research: Thymus/Immunology/Stem cells

Title of presentation: Research scientist career

Brief summary of presentation:

In high school I enjoyed biology, so I did a “bachelor of biomedical science” at Monash University. I didn’t know what I wanted to do after that, but decided to try research honours, which is lab research and ended up liking it. After working as a research assistant, I transferred to a PhD in immunology. This was tough but great, I learnt a lot and subsequently have a good degree. I’m now working as a Post-doctoral level research scientist.

Lab science involves lots of experiments which can be quite fun but also frustrating - its fun to problem solve, but not so fun when things go wrong.

If you have an enquiring mind, like to ask lots of questions and are determined, then a PhD is for you. People are in this field at least in part for "the greater good", not to be millionaires (not with our pay!).

A great plus in studying a PhD is that you get to travel around the world, attending science conferences - and your boss generally pays for most/all of it. So far I have been too: Heron Island, Brisbane, Austria and Beijing.

There is definitly more than one option with a science degree, I am now interested in the public health system and am enquiring into this career line now.
