Monash Science Centre 2009 Lecture Series

Dr. Tim Moss

Position: Senior Research Fellow

Department: Physiology

Areas of research: Development and function of the body before and after birth

Title of presentation: Why I went to University and why I never want to leave

Brief summary of presentation:

When I was at high school, I didn’t even know that jobs like mine even existed. I loved chemistry and biology, so I enrolled to do a science degree at Monash. I really liked biology at Monash, and I wanted to study things related to medicine, so I studied biochemistry, pharmacology and physiology. I really liked physiology, and wondered if I’d like to do research, so I did an Honours year. I loved research, so I worked hard during my Honours year and earned a scholarship to do a PhD. I enjoyed my PhD so much that I’ve kept doing research since. I study development before birth, and how that affects our health after we’re born. I’m particularly interested in ways to better look after babies born preterm. My job at Monash gives me the freedom to do just about anything I like – I do experiments, give lectures, run practical classes and train research students – in an exciting place full of interesting people and ideas.
